Legal Team size: 120+ legal staff covering 36 countries in Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada

During the past year, what are you/your teams’ proudest accomplishments?

2025 was a milestone year for Citi’s Legal teams across Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada. With the addition of Canada to our regional mandate, we expanded our geographic scope and strengthened our strategic alignment across North and Latin America. Our lawyers advised on multiple multi-billion-dollar transactions, including sophisticated cross-border financings executed in highly regulated environments, requiring agile legal support and coordination across jurisdictions. A core component of our work involved financing sovereign and quasi-sovereign entities, which is critical to the economic stability and development of countries across the region. We bring best-in-class practices, innovative transaction structures and advanced solutions to our markets, supporting local economies, strengthening capital markets and meeting the financing needs that drive national and regional economic growth. Through this work, we contribute meaningfully to the deepening of financial markets across the continent.

We continued to drive innovation, including providing legal support for AI integration, developments in structured finance and the implementation of digital solutions across the region. Our teams worked closely with regulators and business partners to shape and implement evolving legal frameworks.

We also successfully completed the establishment of a new financial group in Mexico following the separation of Citibanamex, positioning Citi Mexico as the leading revenue generator in Latin America and the eighth systemically important bank in Mexico—an achievement reflecting both strategic execution and disciplined legal oversight. Our impact was also recognised externally, with lawyers across several jurisdictions named in GC Powerlist editions throughout the region.

What strategic priorities are guiding you and your team in 2025?

In 2026, our overarching priority is to continue positioning Legal as a strategic enabler of the business. As Citi focuses on growth and becoming the leading financial institution across markets, our legal team will play a critical role in enabling safe, responsible execution and unlocking business opportunities across Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada. We will continue executing large, complex transactions and enhancing our risk management frameworks to navigate evolving regulatory landscapes. A major priority is maintaining cross-border consistency and excellence through ‘One Legal’ collaboration – coordinating legal strategies across our team and global partners. Talent development will remain front and centre. We are committed to building the next generation of legal leaders, strengthening expertise in AI, digital assets and other emerging areas, and ensuring that our teams continue to deliver at the highest levels of performance and integrity.

Do you have a cause, business-related or otherwise, that you are passionate about?

We are deeply committed to developing legal talent and giving back to our communities. In 2025, our teams led meaningful pro bono efforts and legal education initiatives. In Central America, we led an initiative in which more than 130 entrepreneurs participated in legal workshops on corporate law, IP, and tax in partnership with NGOs and local counsel. In Colombia, our team supported over 40 microfinance institutions through education on personal data and consumer rights. In Peru and Ecuador, we partnered with NGOs to address youth justice and women’s rights. In the Caribbean, we coached first-year law students for a regional client counselling competition, and in Miami, our lawyers volunteered at a small claims court clinic to support low-income plaintiffs. These programmes reflect our region-wide commitment to justice, inclusion and leadership beyond the office. Our lawyers are not only legal professionals, they are community leaders, mentors and agents of change.
