Head of legal for Mexico- legal director | BNP Paribas
How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
I think it is very important to do a good mapping of the Legal risks prior any crisis, and have the adequate processes in place, so we know how to respond to any crisis and try to mitigate the risks. However, the risks can be mitigated but will not be eliminated completely.
In a period of crisis, I analyse the crisis with my other team members involved, together with the strategy of the Bank, and we also focus on the main risks and worst-case scenarios involved in the situation. Once we have a full picture, we try to focus on the 2 or 3 best scenarios and the possible impacts that we may have, and then I communicate the actions to be taken to the CEO and the stakeholders involved. Depending on the crises, we may also need to report it on a regional or group level.
What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?
My company takes the sustainability as part of its core values and across all its business units, as the General Counsel of BNP Paribas Mexico, the main role is on the advisory side, on the advantages of implementing correctly the ESG principles in our daily businesses, and having a seat at the table in the relevant committees where the sustainability initiatives are discussed and implemented. BNP Paribas is a recognised pioneer and leader in sustainable finance, and therefore, our clients also look for our advisory and our vision on how to structure an operation focused in sustainability, and what are the global trends on sustainability. We also ask for our vendors to implement sustainability policies and metrics in their respective companies.
