Director of legal and compliance | Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Mexico

Team size: Eight

How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?

During periods of instability or crises my general approach is to work in collaboration with our senior management and other department heads or directors in order to clearly asses the root cause and how it is affecting the company. Understanding what is causing the problem and the effects of it in the company is key to determining a solution and steps to solving or confronting the situation. The legal and compliance function is not only a safeguard to the bank, but a strategic partner for anticipating challenges and reacting accordingly to them.

What are the major cases or transactions you have been involved in recently?

The most recent and relevant transaction I participate in was a bridge loan for the construction of an industrial plant amounting to $100 million. Additionally, I lead and was part of the team designated internally to implement the derivatives product for the institution.

What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute?

In such regard the bank has implemented an ESG policy and structure. As one of my functions is to ensure these commitments are met and that the bank takes the necessary steps in order to achieve them and comply with them.
