How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
During periods of instability or crisis, I believe it is essential to remain anchored to the core priorities of the business strategy as defined by top management, trust in the intuition shaped by years of professional experience and rely on the strength of the right team. This focus helps cut through distractions, maintain clarity of thought, and ensure the legal function contributes with precision and agility in navigating unforeseen challenges.
As a member of the Group Management Committee, I am directly involved in strategic discussions, which enables me to anticipate critical business needs and align legal responses accordingly. This proximity ensures that legal considerations are embedded from the outset in major initiatives and decisions, reinforcing resilience and supporting the organisation’s ability to adapt swiftly and effectively.
What are the major cases or transactions you have been involved in recently?
In recent months, I have played a key role in several high-profile M&A transactions and complex governance matters. While some of these activities have been publicly disclosed through official press releases, the majority remain confidential due to their sensitive nature. My involvement has spanned strategic legal structuring, regulatory compliance, and board-level advisory.
What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?
Sustainability is a cornerstone of Generali’s 2025–2027 strategic plan, Lifetime Partner 27: Driving Excellence. The Group has set ambitious targets to support the green and just transition—committing to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, developing climate transition solutions, and addressing societal resilience through tailored propositions for SMEs and vulnerable communities.
The Group’s approach is structured around four Responsible Roles:
Responsible Insurer: Offering insurance solutions with embedded social and environmental value, supporting green technologies, partnering with the UNDP to protect vulnerable populations, and promoting the sustainable transition of European small and medium-sized enterprise through the SME EnterPRIZE;
Responsible Investor: Fully integrating ESG criteria into investment strategies, with a long-term net-zero commitment;
Responsible Employer: Promoting diversity, inclusion, and flexible work models, with a goal to increase women in strategic roles;
Responsible Corporate Citizen: Empowering disadvantaged communities through The Human Safety Net, a global movement of people helping people.
The General Counsel can play a key role in embedding ESG principles across the organisation. This includes supporting in the interpretation of evolving ESG regulations, mapping and deep diving ESG litigation, integrating sustainability into internal governance, internal regulation and major financial transactions, and leading by example—embedding ESG KPIs into the legal team’s annual goals and fostering a diverse, inclusive work environment.
