What are the key projects that you have been involved in over the past 12 months?
Over the past year, I have supported the business in expanding operations across all cities in Cyprus, beyond Limassol where our main resort is located, with a particular focus on the capital, Nicosia. This included work to support the passage of relevant legislation.
I also led efforts to pass legislation preventing the introduction of unexpected restrictions on the use of cash in Cyprus casinos. In addition, I reached agreement with the Cyprus Gaming Regulator on a comprehensive compliance framework.
Finally, I established the labour legal framework required for the resort and casino to operate lawfully.
Have you had any experiences during your career as a lawyer that stand out as particularly unique or interesting?
I led Ryanair to arbitration in London and won the case against them. I have closed deals with governments and was involved in opening the Integrated Casino Resort, City of Dreams Mediterranean, in Cyprus.
What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess?
A modern in-house counsel must have strong commercial awareness and the ability to strike the right balance between compliance and business operations, as well as between closing a deal and risking losing it.
