Career Biography

Dr. Nancy Verra is the General Counsel, Chief Legal, Regulatory and Compliance Officer of OPAP Group. Verra boasts more than 25 years professional experience in positions with high legal responsibility in companies listed in ATHEX. She has a demonstrated legal working experience in heavy regulated industry markets, corporate, compliance, litigation and arbitration combined with top executive management skills. She is BoD member in various companies of OPAP SA. She holds an LL.B form the Law School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, an LL.M in International Economic Law from the University of Warwick and a doctorate from the University of London under scholarship. She has been member of the Athens Bar Association since 2000, and is qualified to practice before the Supreme Court and the Council of State. She is also member of the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR.

What are the key projects that you have been involved in over the past 12 months?

A successful participation in a tendering process for the renewal of a gaming license of the Company, important M&As, the award of a gaming license by the Greek State, successful results for important litigation cases, deployment of AI tools in the compliance field for which the team has been acknowledged with top recognitions.

How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?

My strategy revolves around enabling proactiveness through hard work and thorough analysis of risks. This involves ensuring internal alignment with key stakeholders to seamlessly integrate our legal strategy with the business needs. By doing so, I can effectively mitigate risks and achieve stability for the company in a smooth and efficient manner.

Have you had any experiences during your career as a lawyer that stand out as particularly unique or interesting?

Throughout my time in leading senior roles, I’ve encountered some truly unique challenges. One of the standout aspects has been navigating significant corporate transformations, such as mergers and acquisitions, shareholder stake acquisitions, and major organisational changes. The key lesson I’ve learned from these striking company transformations is the importance of remaining true to the company and its values and to navigate these changes with composure, steady hand, clear vision and integrity. As legal counsel, it’s crucial to stay aligned with the core principles of the organisation while also supporting and guiding the legal team. This is the only way to ensure a smooth transition and maintain trust within the company.
