What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess?
My perspective is shaped by our company’s purpose and values, which position in-house counsel as more than technical experts. Guided by the Novo Nordisk Way, which emphasizes ethics, accountability, and a patient-centric approach, the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel in the pharmaceutical industry include an unwavering ethical compass, moving beyond “Is it legal?” to “Is it right?” and safeguarding the company’s reputation and mission. Strategic business acumen allows counsel to act as a proactive partner, understanding the business model, commercial realities, and strategic objectives to provide practical solutions. Adaptability in a dynamic environment is essential, as counsel must anticipate regulatory shifts, identify risks, and help the organisation pivot while remaining accountable and innovative. Strong communication and collaboration skills enable counsel to translate complex legal concepts into clear guidance and build trust across functions. Finally, digital literacy and technological proficiency are critical for navigating challenges in data privacy, cybersecurity, and AI, allowing counsel to leverage opportunities responsibly. Together, these attributes empower in-house counsel to protect the company while actively contributing to its success.
What is a cause, business or otherwise, that you are passionate about?
When I think about a cause I’m passionate about, it’s undoubtedly the promotion of wellness and physical exercise as a foundation for mental clarity, physical health and overall well-being. In our increasingly fast-paced and digitally saturated world, mental clutter, stress and physical inactivity have become far too common. I believe that integrating regular physical activity into our daily lives isn’t just about aesthetics or athletic performance, it’s about empowering a clear, focused and resilient mind. Whether it’s a power walk, a high-intensity workout or a restorative yoga session, physical activity can reduce anxiety, boost mood, sharpen focus and improve sleep. At the same time, it plays a critical role in maintaining a healthy weight, balancing blood sugar and preventing obesity and obesity-related conditions like type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
