What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess?

To begin with, sound judgment, the ability to interpret complex legal issues, apply them pragmatically and communicate concisely and clearly in plain English. Being strategic and proactive in identifying legal risks and opportunities and aligning legal strategy with business objectives is also key. Being agile and embracing change and being tech savvy (good knowledge of data privacy, cybersecurity and AI). And, lastly, being collaborative and working well with cross-functional teams and build and maintain trusting relationships

How can general counsel foster a corporate culture that supports ESG principles and compliance across all levels of the organisation?

Lead by demonstrating ethical behaviour and ESG-conscious decision-making; work closely to align with business ESG goals; ensure transparent reporting; monitor and advise on evolving ESG regulations; promote whistleblower protections and confidential reporting channels; ensure legal oversight of ESG disclosures to investors, regulators, and the public; and help manage reputational risk and stakeholder expectations.

Based on your experiences in the past year, are there any trends in the legal or business world that you are keeping an eye on, of which you think other in-house lawyers should be mindful?

I would highlight two of them. To begin with, AI Integration. It is critical to keep up with developments and be aware of evolving regulations. And, secondly, a greater focus on data practices in legal departments which must be compliant with evolving standards.
