What are the key projects that you have been involved in over the past 12 months?
We have had a busy year navigating regulatory developments regarding the payment of commission for motor finance products, a number of successful securitisations, the launch of a new product Finance Ireland Insurance Premium Finance and commencement of our project to ensure compliance with the Central Bank’s revised Consumer Protection Code in March 2026.
What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess?
Having a comprehensive understanding of the business which you advise is the key attribute. You need to be fully integrated member of the company to add value and reduce to need to use external counsel. Once you have grasped this you can proactively minimise legal and regulatory risk while simultaneously facilitating the business to grow.
Based on your experiences in the past year, are there any trends in the legal or business world that you are keeping an eye on, of which you think other in-house lawyers should be mindful?
As the world of Law, Compliance and Risk management becomes increasing integrated you need to be prepared to expand your skill set beyond just legal advice. This means being open to taking on other core functions of the business, for example regulatory horizon scanning, managing compliance audits, interaction with regulators, governance and scenario planning.
What is a cause, business or otherwise, that you are passionate about?
I studied Sustainable Development and Organic Horticulture several years ago and I continue to be an advocate for the integration of sustainable principles into our daily lives where feasible.
