What are the key projects that you have been involved in over the past 12 months?

CarTrawler is a B2B business working with airlines and OTAs, and the Legal team plays a key role in securing new contracts with some of the world’s largest airlines and travel businesses. In the past 12 months, we have signed contracts with the likes of American Airlines, Qantas and Jet2.

CarTrawler was also recently certified as a B Corp, a project in which the Legal team played a key role. Certified B Corps meet high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency and CarTrawler is the sole B Corp in the travel tech sector in Ireland. To become B Corp certified, CarTrawler engaged in a three-year evaluation process which included over 300 metrics on CarTrawler’s practices and outputs across five key categories.

What measures has your company taken to incorporate sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how can general counsel contribute to driving such initiatives within the organisation?

As mentioned above, the General Counsel played a key role in CarTrawler’s certification as a B-Corp due to its meeting high social, environmental and governance standards. As part of that process, the Company led several sustainability initiatives, including a green car rental promotion to boost the use of electric vehicles through enhanced eco content merchandising, collaboration with suppliers to set EV targets, and an education programme to address concerns regarding EV rental. We also introduced an environmental management system to reduce water, waste and energy consumption by 30% by 2030 and further progressed our environmental commitment by pledging to meet the short-term SME target with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to keep our scope-1 and scope-2 emissions at zero tonnes and to measure and reduce our scope-3 emissions.

Based on your experiences in the past year, are there any trends in the legal or business world that you are keeping an eye on, of which you think other in-house lawyers should be mindful?

The Legal Team have been involved in a project to look at the potential impact and opportunities arising from Gen AI for CarTrawler’s business and also in relation to the legal function. Things are obviously developing extraordinarily quickly in the Gen AI world, and it is important for us as a Legal Team to try and keep up to date on the latest developments.
