How has your role as in-house counsel evolved over the past few years, particularly in response to shifting global or regional dynamics?
My role as in-house legal counsel has evolved significantly in recent years, particularly in response to the increasingly dynamic and technology-driven environment. One of the most notable changes has been the adoption of artificial intelligence tools, which have transformed the way we approach various legal tasks.
These technologies have enabled us to streamline repetitive processes like contract review, document management, and risk analysis, resulting in significant time efficiencies. This not only frees up operational capacity but also allows us to focus on more strategic functions that add greater value to the business.
In the retail sector, where agility and responsiveness are essential, artificial intelligence has become a crucial ally. It helps us deliver faster, more accurate legal advice that aligns with business goals. Embracing these tools is not just a competitive advantage but a necessity for staying relevant and adding value to the legal function.
How do you build and maintain strong relationships with key internal stakeholders, especially in high-pressure or fast-moving scenarios?
Building and maintaining strong relationships with internal stakeholders begins with understanding that, as a support function, we must build trust by providing timely, effective responses that align with business needs. In high-pressure or fast-moving scenarios, this becomes even more critical.
Achieving this requires open and consistent communication, along with a clear understanding of the objectives and challenges each department faces. This involves staying updated on legal developments and gaining a deep understanding of the business we support, its priorities, and its operational environment. By taking a holistic approach, we can anticipate needs, propose practical solutions, and support the business with agility.
By demonstrating a thorough understanding of the company’s processes, the legal department can contribute actively to its growth, participating in critical and strategic decision-making. This approach enables us to provide legal insights that not only mitigate risks but also foster sustainable business growth, reinforcing our role as key partners within the organisation.
