Kristin Hungnes
General counsel | Wallenius Wilhelmsen ASA
What are the key projects that you have been involved in over the past twelve months?
Although I recently joined Wallenius Wilhelmsen, the legal team has spent the past year tackling critical issues such as the legal challenges in the Strait of Hormuz, adapting to changing fuel regulations and managing rising government fees across various regions. This demonstrates the team’s capability to handle complex, cross-functional matters.
The company is also advancing digital transformation to boost efficiency and transparency. Legal plays a key role by ensuring compliance is integrated into new systems, combining technology and maritime expertise for a sustainable future.
We have been instrumental in negotiating and reviewing several key contracts, as well as supporting the launch of new Shaper class RoRo vessels. Our work included managing shipbuilder agreements, ensuring regulatory compliance and advising on environmental and safety standards. By working closely with colleagues, we secured solid terms to enable successful delivery of these vessels.
What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel?
A modern in-house counsel must combine commercial awareness with legal expertise, grasp the business’s strategy and risk appetite, and exercise sound judgement. Integrity, clear communication and strong stakeholder management are vital for building trust. Adaptability and curiosity are essential as technology and regulation change, while leadership and resilience enable effective team performance and confident decision-making.
As the world continues to face geopolitical, technological and economic uncertainty, how do you manage legal risk while still prioritising commercial objectives?
Managing legal risk is underpinned by our longstanding maritime and logistics expertise, but above all, the safety of our crew, customer cargo and assets is always our top priority. Drawing on over 160 years of global experience, we identify and address major risks early to maintain commercial momentum, guided by sound judgement and strong values. Through open dialogue with the business, we take informed decisions that safeguard our people and assets, ensuring we continue to deliver for our customers whilst upholding safety at every turn.
