Appointed to OiLSERV’s executive leadership team in 2012, Marthinus Vermeulen’s time as head of the company’s legal and compliance functions has seen these teams achieve an extremely high level of proficiency. Working directly with the company’s CEO, COO, CFO and other executives, Vermeulen has achieved vast experience doing business in multiple countries across the region and credits the role with ‘broadening his perspective as a lawyer through experiences, working with different cultures and legal systems’. Vermeulen’s establishment of both the legal and compliance functions for the company was no mean feat. It involved the creation of standard terms and conditions, contract templates, ethics and compliance manuals, policies and procedures, training videos and materials alongside due diligence performed on all suppliers and potential clients. As well as this, Vermeulen has established a secretarial database and IP policy for the company, and oversaw the departments through a major external audit which brought them up to International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) standards. ‘Overall, the legal and the ethics and compliance departments helped steer the company through enormous regional growth into new markets in the MENA region’, Vermeulen says of his departments’ success. ‘Personally, I feel I have also proved to be a key contributor to the executive leadership team and trusted advisor to the business after successfully overcoming a wide variety of challenges on behalf of the company’.
