MTR, Hong Kong’s mass transit railway corporation, was established in 1975 and is the provider of underground, overground and other mass transit services for the country. It accrued a revenue figure of US$7bn and is listed in the Forbes 2000 list of global companies. The corporation operates 10 railway lines, a light rail network, and high speed airport connection and is used on week days by almost six million people. The company is implementing rapid expansion policies to keep up with the ever growing demand of the city with a target of expanding the railway network by 25%. MTR operates and designs these projects in-house. Brian Downie, general manager of legal operations, growth and business, has led the legal department at MTR since 2014. MTR is also expanding into different markets with residential and commercial property, shopping malls, advertising, and telecoms on trains and in stations. Additionally, it is expanding internationally to Sweden, Australia, the UK and mainland China.
