MTR, Hong Kong’s mass transit railway corporation, is the provider of underground, overground and other mass transit services for the country. Returning to the GC Powerlist: Hong Kong Teams following its recognition in 2018, MTR’s legal team continues to demonstrate excellence in regards to in-house legal management. The corporation operates 10 railway lines, a light rail network, and a high speed airport connection, and is used on weekdays by almost six million people. The company is implementing rapid expansion policies to keep up with the ever-growing demand of the city with a target of expanding the railway network by 25%. In June 2019, MTR released a new app which features alighting reminders, journey planning and other capabilities. These advancements were made possible by collaborating with technology providers which were facilitated through the efforts of the legal team. Brian Downie, general manager of legal operations, growth and business, continues to expertly lead the legal department. MTR is also expanding into different markets with residential and commercial property, shopping malls, advertising, and telecoms on trains and in stations. Additionally, it is expanding internationally to Sweden, Australia, the UK and mainland China.
