Have you had any experiences during your legal career that stand out as particularly unique or interesting?

I have had an eventful legal practice starting in private practice in my early years, where I gained foundation in practical courtroom experience, drafting of pleadings, exposure to supporting corporates in commercial-related work as well as in intellectual property matters. I transitioned to corporate practice and was fortunate to have had the opportunity to serve in senior leadership of institutions in the banking, insurance and now aviation sectors, where I have provided leadership to legal teams as well as supported the Board governance operations of these institutions, cumulatively over a period of over 22 years.

In this journey, I have had very insightful experience and exposure in leading significant corporate actions such as Rights Issues, setting up of cross border business operations, mergers and acquisitions, structuring and restructuring of complex aircraft leasing and financing agreements, dealing with complex antitrust and competition matters in the strategic collaborations that businesses require in modern times to name but a few, and in the process developed great expertise and experience in leading multisectoral Boards (group holding and subsidiary operations) from a Corporate Governance (corporate secretarial) perspective.

How are you bringing the legal department closer to your business colleagues?

Ensuring you have in your team dedicated and self-driven staff is a key factor towards this end. It requires calculated immersion of the teams through the strategic ambitions of the organisation, which facilitates easier alignment of their day-to-day actions (KPIs) as well as their personal development with where the business is heading. One has to ensure there is progressive development of technical capacity / knowledge of the staff as well as leadership capability (through mentorship and coaching) to enable them to understand the direction the business is taking and eventually enable them prioritise what output is key for the organisation’s targeted progression as well as theirs.
