What are the key projects that you have been involved in over the past twelve months?
Amongst other things, I have been closely involved in key projects concerning the legal and regulatory aspects of European energy market coupling. My work has focused on ensuring compliance with and advising on the evolving EU framework governing cross-border electricity markets. A key part of my role has been assessing legal risks and regulatory requirements under frameworks such as the CACM Regulation.
In this context, I have supported complex, multi-stakeholder processes involving transmission system operators, power exchanges, regulators, and European institutions such as ACER and DG Energy. This has included advising on governance structures, contractual frameworks, and competition law considerations, particularly regarding market design elements and their implementation across jurisdictions and parties.
What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel?
I believe that a modern in-house counsel must have a strategic and commercial mindset and be an active contributor to the business. This requires not only legal expertise, but also a strong understanding of the market, legal and regulatory frameworks, and stakeholder dynamics.
Beyond your core legal role, are there any causes or initiatives you’re passionate about?
Beyond my core legal role, I am deeply engaged in the evolution of the European Internal Energy Market, with a particular focus on market coupling involving power exchanges and transmission system operators. I am driven by the impact these initiatives have on optimising resource allocation, improving cross-border trading and strengthening an integrated electricity system.
I am particularly interested in how legal and regulatory frameworks can support both market integration and system security in a complex and uncertain environment. Energy has increasingly become a matter of strategic security in Europe. Geopolitical tensions and supply disruptions have underscored the critical importance of resilient market structures and secure energy flows. This has elevated energy policy from a primarily technical and economic domain to a core component of European security and stability.
Over the next years, in-house lawyers in the energy sector will need to closely monitor a combination of regulatory, geopolitical and technological developments that are increasingly interconnected. One key trend is the continued expansion and tightening of regulation in areas linked to energy, sustainability, data, and competition law. The evolution of the energy market coupling in Europe will continue to require careful legal oversight. Regulatory frameworks aim to balance efficiency, commercial markets, security of supply and resilience. For in-house lawyers, this means navigating an increasingly complex intersection between energy law, EU regulation, and security policy. In addition, comes the trend of digitalisation and data-driven market operations. This raises ongoing challenges around data governance, cybersecurity and the legal implications of algorithmic and automated decision-making in market systems. Legal teams will need to stay closely aligned with IT, compliance and operational functions. At the same time, competition law remains a key area of focus, particularly in industries where competition and cooperation coexist, such as in energy market coupling arrangements.
