How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
The legal department has been a fundamental pillar in responding to moments of crisis. After the pandemic the company has struggled to recover and this has forced us to react to every challenge: financial redesigns, adjustments to new governance policies on matters such as environmental issues, accessibility, judicial criteria, etc. In each case we have been the ones generating resilience with great success.
What are the major cases or transactions you have been involved in recently?
Supreme Court ruling on accessibility.
Negotiation and interpretation of the Federal Cinematography Law, including a specific article on subtitling.
Recognition of the company for matters of Hygiene, Civil Protection, Resource Management and Social Responsibility by authorities at all three levels of government.
Maintaining litigation risk across various lawsuits at a minimal rate, achieving savings of approximately USD15 m.
What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?
Cinépolis incorporates sustainable aspects into its operational and governance pillars. We are working on saving material and natural resources. In each of these activities the legal team plays an important role because we are the bridge between government agencies, suppliers and operational implementation to ensure that sustainability intentions are aligned with what is legally feasible.
How do you prioritise diversity and inclusion within your legal department, and what initiatives have you implemented to foster a more inclusive and equitable work environment?
Being the leader of the Accessibility Committee allows me to be sensitive to inclusion needs within my team and across other areas. We implement actions to eliminate biases that are not useful and retain those that accurately reflect an employee’s capability.
