How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
In times of instability, my approach combines proactive risk assessment with close alignment to the company’s strategic objectives. At RLH Properties, we develop large-scale luxury hotel and residential projects, which involve regulatory, environmental, labour, and contractual risks. During crises — such as contractor defaults or unexpected regulatory changes — I implement immediate containment strategies, including surety bond claims, renegotiation of obligations, or activation of alternative suppliers, ensuring business continuity. The legal department does not operate in isolation; I coordinate with finance, development, and operations so that our legal actions protect liquidity, assets, and stakeholder relationships. This comprehensive approach allows the legal strategy not only to mitigate risks, but also to reinforce the organisation’s resilience and credibility in the market.
What are the major cases or transactions you have been involved in recently?
Over the last years, I have led and advised on major high-profile projects in the hospitality and luxury residential sector, including: the $50m expansion of Banyan Tree Mayakoba, delivering 34 beachfront suites and seven villas; the $75m construction of One&Only Mandarina, an ultra-luxury resort with 105 keys in Riviera Nayarit; the $40m renovation of Fairmont Mayakoba, involving 401 rooms, restaurants, and beachfront facilities; and the €20m renovation of Rosewood Villa Magna in Madrid, consolidating RLH’s international footprint.
I am also currently advising on the Rosewood Mandarina, comprising 140 rooms and 63 branded residences, one of RLH’s flagship projects.
Additionally, I have successfully recovered more than MXN 300m through claims on surety bonds against non-compliant contractors, strengthening the company’s financial standing and reinforcing accountability in the construction sector.
What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?
Sustainability is embedded into RLH Properties’ DNA. All our developments integrate environmental and community commitments, including impact assessments, forest obligations, and compliance with environmental standards. As Senior Legal Counsel, I ensure that contracts incorporate sustainability clauses, ranging from waste management to responsible sourcing and long-term operational obligations. I also oversee regulatory frameworks for licenses, land use changes, and environmental permits, guaranteeing alignment with both local regulations and international standards. By doing so, I elevate sustainability from a compliance requirement to a value-creation mechanism that enhances
