Senior aviation regulatory counsel | Volaris

Brenda Daniela Canchola Alvarez
Senior aviation regulatory counsel | Volaris
Team size: I manage one direct report and am part of a Legal Department led by VP Legal, comprising over 20 in-house lawyers.
How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
In such a dynamic and challenging sector as aviation, I have frequently navigated periods of uncertainty and crisis. My strategy is to act not only as legal counsel, but also as a strategic partner, working closely with multidisciplinary teams to move beyond a purely advisory role. I actively contribute to the design of compliance solutions, identifying risks and opportunities in both new and existing U.S. regulations while fostering continuous improvement. My focus is on developing strategies that are legally sound and business-oriented, always prioritising operational continuity, safety, and sustainable profitability.
In my view, resilience is achieved by maintaining open communication and strong information flows that enable the organisation to anticipate regulatory developments and act decisively with all relevant knowledge. My role is to provide clarity, reduce complexity, and empower teams to transform legal requirements into actionable strategies, ensuring that the legal function remains fully aligned with business priorities.
What are the major cases or transactions you have been involved in recently?
One of the major transactions I have recently been involved in was serving as one of the two counsels leading the negotiation and closing of major commercial code share alliances between Volaris with Ibera and Copa Airlines. These agreements posed a particular challenge due to the complexity of the aviation industry, requiring strict compliance with national and international regulatory frameworks, the alignment of diverse commercial and operational interests, and the resolution of highly technical matters such as scheduling, and passenger service obligations. Beyond the legal work and contractual protection required, I contributed to positioning these transactions as strategic instruments that strengthened the company’s international connectivity, expanded its network, and enhanced its competitive standing in the market.
What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?
The company has embedded sustainability into its corporate strategy, consistent with its mission as an ultra-low-cost airline. This strategy is built on a seven-pillar framework: protecting corporate reputation, engaging stakeholders, managing ESG risks and opportunities, ensuring compliance and accountability, strengthening governance, and training.
Under the leadership of my General Counsel, who actively drives ESG initiatives, the legal team plays a key role in aligning legal strategy with these pillars and ensuring that decision-making consistently supports the company’s sustainability vision. In my role, I participate in the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) working group, where together with my regulatory team I analyse legal frameworks, identify challenges, and contribute to action plans for SAF implementation in México, in collaboration with stakeholders.
This advances the company’s long-term sustainability objectives by reducing or offsetting carbon emissions; it reinforces the commitment to operating more efficiently and sustainably, with a clear focus on reducing our carbon footprint on every flight.
