How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
Working in the tech industry, I have learned that instability and crisis are not exceptional events but rather recurrent components of the business, and the legal response is a strategic driver that helps guarantee organisational resilience. When facing a crisis, I prioritise identifying risks as the first step, mainly focusing on regulatory response, reputational risks, and litigation exposure. At this stage, it is also important to identify possible risk scenarios and assess the probability of their materialisation and impact. For this, it is crucial to work with the business and other cross-functional stakeholders to ensure better results. Additionally, in these situations, the value of legal counsel often lies in communicating effectively, sharing relevant information with pertinent stakeholders in due time.
Achieving resilience in a fast-paced, highly regulated industry like tech depends on the legal department’s active participation in the company’s highest-level strategic discussions. Our role is to act as a trusted adviser, ensuring we contribute tangible value to align the legal strategy with the business’s goals.
What are the major cases or transactions you have been involved in recently?
I have significantly contributed to core business priorities by focusing on ethical innovation, market growth, and digital integrity across Latin America.
In combating misinformation and promoting content integrity, I drove key contractual engagements with YouTube partners focused on fostering the creation of high-quality content and reliable information in critical verticals, specifically Health and Education. This work successfully facilitated access to valuable, factual information for millions of users across Latin America, directly countering the spread of misinformation in the digital ecosystem.
In AI development and regulatory strategy, I have been directly involved in multifaceted projects related to the development of Artificial Intelligence in Mexico. My scope includes negotiating contracts for training and enhancing machine learning models, as well as providing counsel on draft legislation. These efforts support the development of AI technology in Mexico, fostering innovation while simultaneously ensuring robust user protection.
In strategic market negotiations, over the last year I led and executed high-stakes contract negotiations for the Android ecosystem across Mexico and Latin America with the region’s most influential telecommunications partners.
How do you prioritise diversity and inclusion within your legal department, and what initiatives have you implemented to foster a more inclusive and equitable work environment?
Beyond core legal functions, I have a strong commitment to developing the next generation of legal talent by co-leading the Legal Summer Institute in Mexico for two consecutive years. This initiative is specifically designed to empower the professional careers of young law students, many of whom are the first in their families to attend university, directly fostering social mobility within the legal profession. I encourage everyone in the legal team to get involved, in any way they can, in this important project.
This year, 17 law students were invited to spend one week at the Google Mexico offices, immersed in legal-tech knowledge and soft skills sessions to enhance their professional profiles. LSI aims to improve access to in-house careers at tech companies by expanding opportunities and removing barriers in the legal industry.
