Sara Rodríguez Gómez
Legal corporate director | The Home Depot Mexico
How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
At Home Depot, every day is a new opportunity to help our customers bring their dreams to life through the purchase of our products. A bad sales day or week does not affect the energy and commitment we bring to the next one. This mindset is deeply embedded in our legal strategy as well. In retail, planning is essential—not only for business operations but also for legal preparedness. We focus on being preventive, ensuring our programs and compliance frameworks are in order so we can respond effectively to uncertainty, whether it be regulatory reforms, inspections, or litigation. In times of crisis or instability, I prioritise clear communication of expectations , rapid risk assessment, and alignment with executive leadership. My legal strategy is designed to be agile and responsive. For example, during a recent potential cybersecurity incident of service provider , I led the legal response by coordinating with privacy officers, external counsel, and our U.S. legal counterparts to ensure compliance, transparency, and swift resolution to protect the company and our privacy rights.
What are the major cases or transactions you have been involved in recently?
Over the past year, I’ve led and participated in a wide range of strategic legal initiatives. I oversaw the legal structuring of solar energy purchase agreements for 15 stores, supporting our sustainability goals. I also led the real estate legal team for one and a half years, during which we successfully opened five new stores and 21 one expansion projects in the pipeline, ensuring compliance and timely execution of all legal aspects.
In collaboration with our U.S. legal team, I reviewed and negotiated contracts related to our participation as a FIFA 2026 promoter, a high-profile project that required cross-border coordination and brand protection. We’ve also provided legal oversight for consumer-facing promotions, contests, and marketing dynamics, including those planned for the upcoming World Cup.
Operationally, we are currently regularising maintenance contracts across all our stores to ensure consistency and legal clarity.
In the areas of competition law and data privacy, I lead our annual training programs and preventive compliance initiatives.
Additionally, we are implementing a centralised technology request management system that integrates all IT areas—Infrastructure, Governance, and Cybersecurity—into a single workflow, allowing for transparent decision-making and contract tracking.
Another milestone was obtaining the IMMEX permit for our technology export center supporting THD USA, which involved navigating complex regulatory requirements. We are also in the process of developing a revised anti-money laundering policy to strengthen our compliance framework. These projects reflect our commitment to legal excellence, operational efficiency, and strategic alignment with business goals.
