Seasoned trial lawyer Robert Hunter rarely has to step inside a courtroom these days. During his 15 years as the company’s GC, he has overseen the introduction of new safety features, product improvements and a training program for users, meaning accidents involving the company’s products dropped to just 5% of what they had once been. Thanks to Hunter’s highly effective team, 60% of cases brought against the company were dismissed without trial two years ago. In addition to being an excellent attorney, Hunter represents the growing influence of corporate counsel across the wider legal community. He was the first in-house counsel in 76 years to serve as president of the International Association of Defense Counsel (IADC), and is the first to serve as Dean of its Corporate Counsel College in Chicago. Next year he is set to become president of the Lawyers for Civil Justice – making him the first corporate counsel to hold this position in the organization’s 27-year history. He says ‘lawyers in private practice used to think we couldn’t have significant input, and now they are starting to see that we can’. James Campbell, of Campbell Trial Lawyers, says ‘no-one has contributed more to the legal profession than Rob Hunter’. Hunter is sure to be popular with outside counsel for another reason: he says ‘when a lawyer does well for us I’ll treat them by sending them and their families on a trip away somewhere that I know they’ll enjoy, such as the Bahamas or skiing. That helps build a very tight and loyal team’.
