Donald Rosenberg was the brains behind two new divisions of Qualcomm’s legal team, that have since ‘taken intellectual property protection to a new level’, observes Bill Urquhart of Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, LLP. Rosenberg created The Strategic IP department, a cross-functional group focused on supporting the company’s development (and occasional acquisition) of high-value IP, a critical component of its success. Secondly, by introducing The Discovery Management Organization, he has managed to implement more cost-effective solutions to support the company through the relentless demands of IP litigaion. The organization manages all aspects of the discovery process using the best tools available, and ensures that the information is placed in the hands of the most relevant attorneys, at the soonest possible opportunity. As Urquahart points out, ‘intellectual property is Qualcomm’s lifeblood, and accordingly, the legal department plays a central role in its business’. As a result of Rosenberg’s insight and its investment in such initiatives, it is now poised to deal with the relentless threat of patent infringement litigation.
