General counsel Martin Wartmann says, ‘We have become more business partners with a legal background rather than lawyers with an understanding for the business’. The legal department were integral in the change of ownership at the end of 2015, helping to coordinate major strategic decisions during a period of turbulence. The team has consequently had to adapt to various challenges, but, say Wartmann, ‘the team spirit is nevertheless great and we help each other whenever possible’. Wartmann believes it is vital that the general counsel is deeply involved with the business in order to provide efficient advice in the desired form the business requires. He has regular interaction with the CEO and participates in all executive committee meetings and supervisory board meetings.
