With operations in Asia, Australia and Africa and over 130 years of experience, Singtel is Singapore’s largest telecommunications company and one of Asia’s leading communications groups. Heading the legal function of this high profile company is group general counsel, Shantini Sanmuganathan. Supporting Sanmuganathan in the role is a team of some of Singapore’s best in-house lawyers, including Karen Wee who is head of the legal functions for M&As and Treasury and Carol Seah who heads Consumer Legal. The legal team at Singtel worked on a number of important projects and deals for the company recently, gaining internal as well as external recognition from the wider in-house community in the process. Some of these activities include Singtel’s partnership with Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) and the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) to spearhead R&D efforts in emerging technologies that will support Singapore’s transformation into a ‘smart nation’ (as per the nationwide-initiative) and help enable the country’s digital economy. They also worked on Singtel’s Asia-wide strategic partnership with TIS , a leading Japanese systems integration company, to offer cyber security services in Japan to help businesses build cyber resilience and protect critical infrastructure. The team were also credited for their role in Singtel’s 2016 acquisition of shares in Intouch Holdings and Bharti Telecom for a total consideration of S$2.47bn.
