Have you had any experiences during your career as a lawyer that stand out as particularly unique or interesting?
I started my career at Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK), where I had the opportunity to conduct many cases concerning consumer rights on TMT market. I have gained unique legal experience from a regulatory and legislative perspective. After years I have joined The Advertising Council in Poland (self-regulatory body of the advertising market) as an Arbitrator in the Advertising Ethics Committee, being involve in proceedings concerning principles of ethics and good practices on advertising market and within marketing communications. This is an area of additional activity where I can combine legal expertise with pro-bono work having a real impact on shaping advertising standards on the market.
What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess?
From my perspective, it is a business-oriented attitude and ability to seek legal solutions that match company strategy. Nowadays, in a demanding market environment, in-house lawyers are expected to have practical skills in legal risk management and provide recommendations that facilitate business operations. Many lawyers can address the risks, but it’s crucial to be able point out those risks which are material and allow to continue or not given project. The basis of responsibility of an in-house lawyer is to deliver legal services in the best company of interest. In my opinion, this is key in providing constructive input and be a trusted partner for business.
