What has been the number one challenge that has impacted you over the past year?

The economic uncertainty due to the political crisis was the number one challenge in 2022. On top of the non-optimal worldwide context, the political crisis in Peru and the region, in general, led us to massive challenges. As a leader of a department with regional responsibilities, it took hard work as a team to overcome such an exigent context. This entire situation had a big impact on the end consumers buying habits, which reshaped the business and, therefore, our approach to how we deliver our advice. We are definitely living in times where we must adapt at a very fast pace.

Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most?

In my perspective, the AI is and will play a big role on how in-house legal teams perform regarding their internal clients, especially in day-to-day operative and administrative tasks such as document filing, translations, creation of templates and so on. This will create more time for the more essential legal work and make room to be more proactive while advising the business. In a time when we are constantly motivated to improve our own processes, in an effort to ensure that our intervention in the processes of our internal clients is as effective as possible, the continuous development of software is fundamental. Technology it is allowing us, and will allow us, to become more efficient day by day.

What is a cause, business related or otherwise, that you care about, and why?

The ultimate empowerment through information, reflected in the way in which the legal and compliance department that I lead delivers information in order to mitigate risks in our business. Experience has shown that short, tailored, but constant training sessions allow colleagues to have a better understanding of the legal background of the risks we face in our business. Therefore, the whole organisation gets involved with our risks and they fully understand the measures taken to mitigate them, as well as our policies, restrictions, and so on. They develop their own sense of legal and compliance topics, which ultimately helps the company to operate in a virtually risk-free environment.
