Playing a critical role in providing social security services and improving the lives of its citizens, the Ministry of Social Development has been at the forefront of efforts to promote human rights in the Kingdom of Jordan. In recent years it has undertaken significant campaigns to address violence against women, conducted a review of legislation and rules governing disability provisions, undertaken work to help victims of human trafficking and amended domestic violence laws in the country. Addressing difficult legal questions is a fundamental part of the Ministry’s work and legal thinking extends to the top of the organisation: Minister of Social Development H.E. Reem Abu Hassan, one of the founders of the Arab Women’s Legal Network, has been a prominent voice in Middle East human rights law for a number of years. Legal adviser and communications director Ashraf Fawaz Khreis has spearheaded many of these initiatives, working with legal colleagues at the Ministry to generate research, promote social inclusion initiatives, revise existing laws and implement new laws, and form agreements with NGOs and other bodies.
