The Advanced Petrochemical Company started commercial operations in 2008 and is now among the most technologically advanced petrochemicals operations in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Operating with a small support team and with the assistance of a specialised taskforce team, senior legal adviser Elnitaifa Ahmed Kurmino has been at the forefront of many of the company’s recent negotiations and agreements. The team has also introduced new systems to help it monitor risks, for example, an End-user Contract Guardian (ECG) which allows contract benchmarks to be monitored by the individual responsible while updating legal on any developments. The legal team has been quick to address not only issues of high sensitivity, but have also demonstrated a capability to balance recently approved business concepts under the company’s bylaws while incorporating the concepts introduced through new Saudi company law. As one nominator comments, ‘the team is doing what any other team would do, but it is doing it in a better way’.
