About

Formerly a consultant specialising in intellectual property cases with Eversheds, a senior legal advisor at Saudi Mining Holding Company and general counsel with Ma’aden, Sultan Al Booq became general counsel of Saudi Airlines Catering Company (SACC) in 2015. Al Booq has flourished in his role since then, and has relished the level of responsibility he has been given. ‘Being in charge of the compliance, governance, and legal functions within SACC following a clear mandate from the company’s board of directors to establish this function as a policy driven one has been a major career highlight’, Al Booq says. ‘Working closely with SACC’s board of directors, Nomination and Remuneration Committee, and Audit Committee which included dealing with enterprise risk management and governance rules heavily related to the board would also rank highly among the most enjoyable aspects of my career so far’. Al Booq, who has played an important part in the signing of a recent major SACC joint venture, is especially pleased with the state of the company’s 13-strong legal team. ‘After establishing an automated system for all legal activities, we were able to help set accurate and measurable KPIs for our legal professionals, allowing the function to be at the rapid and dynamic pace it is at today. This has successfully changed the company’s mind-set towards the legal function, and has proven the role of compliance to be a cultural one rather than only to do with enforcement. With the kind of infrastructure SACC’s legal function has today, I am able to say that it holds the experience and ability to compete with leading law firms which serve other multimillion companies’, Al Booq, with justifiable confidence, concludes.
