How do you suggest in-house lawyers build strong relationships with business partners?

The classic traits of a good in-house lawyer include a deep knowledge of the relevant laws, a thorough understanding of the business and combining the two into pragmatic and valuable solutions to the benefit of the company and its business. Additionally, put yourself in the shoes of the client, but still draw that redline whenever necessary. Lastly, I believe it is fundamental to have integrity and responsiveness, as in return you will be more trusted and relied on.

In general, what would you like to see change about the external law firms you use?

Even though the end of the billable hour has been pronounced several times, unfortunately it is still very much alive. I would welcome more imagination and flexibility by law firms to define alternative fee arrangements, to better align the interests of both company and law firms.
