How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
My approach to managing legal aspects during periods of crisis or operational disruption centres on three integrated strategies: proactive risk management, strategic business alignment, and agile response capabilities. This involves developing and maintaining a comprehensive risk mitigation framework that balances legal requirements with practical business needs. We achieve this by continuously updating risk assessments, maintaining flexible contingency plans, and ensuring robust compliance systems while actively collaborating with business stakeholders. The framework emphasises both preventive measures and rapid response protocols, considering not just technical legal aspects but also operational implications, resource allocation, and business continuity. In my role as Amazon’s legal lead for fulfillment and operations during the COVID-19 pandemic, I successfully implemented this approach to navigate complex legal and regulatory challenges while significantly expanding operations across the country. This experience demonstrated how an integrated strategy can effectively address both significant risks and day-to-day escalations while maintaining operational resilience and legal compliance during unprecedented circumstances.
What are the major cases or transactions you have been involved in recently?
As the first attorney hired for Amazon Mexico’s Fulfillment and Operations team, I spent nine years playing a pivotal role in the company’s expansion across Mexico and the region. This position provided me with comprehensive exposure to all aspects of Amazon’s operations, from establishing foundational legal frameworks to managing complex regulatory matters, including launching new operational programs, handling intricate tax and customs audits, and navigating significant antitrust investigations. Most recently, my role has expanded to support retail operations, where I’ve led key initiatives such as implementing enhanced compliance controls for our Marketplace sellers and I am developing a novel and still confidential project to improve the Mexican customer shopping experience. My commitment to innovation is further demonstrated through my leadership of an AI legal initiative, where I’m developing a chatbot solution to streamline business support and increase operational efficiency. This work exemplifies my ability to leverage technology in solving complex legal and operational challenges while maintaining robust compliance standards.
What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?
Amazon has integrated sustainability into its core business strategy through multiple initiatives, including our commitment to The Climate Pledge to be net-zero carbon by 2040, development of renewable energy projects, sustainable packaging initiatives, and electric delivery vehicle deployment. In my prior role in Amazon Operations Legal, my team directly provided support to the team responsible for driving these efforts in Mexico. I have actively contributed to Amazon’s sustainability goals through various initiatives. I provided legal support for implementing solar panels in our Fulfillment Centers, led contract negotiations for our electric vehicle fleet pilot program, reviewed sustainable packaging initiatives, and developed the framework for displaying sustainability-related certifications in our Amazon Mexico store. These projects demonstrate our commitment to integrating environmental considerations into our operations while ensuring legal compliance and risk management.
How do you prioritise diversity and inclusion within your legal department, and what initiatives have you implemented to foster a more inclusive and equitable work environment?
My commitment to diversity and inclusion has been demonstrated through several key initiatives throughout my Amazon career. Working in male-dominated environments like fulfilment and operations inspired me to develop a successful women’s mentorship program across my Amazon Operations Legal organization, which significantly improved gender diversity through structured mentoring and professional development. Later, as a working mother, I established a volunteer group supporting legal caregivers across Amazon, organising conferences and family-focused events to promote work-life integration. Currently, as LATAM liaison for the Amazon’s International Legal Inclusion Committee, I drive initiatives that represent local values and diverse communities across the region. These experiences reflect my ongoing dedication to fostering an inclusive workplace culture that supports diverse perspectives and needs.
