Juan José Ríos Garzón
Legal finance manager – Middle Americas zone | Anheuser-Busch InBev
How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure resilience?
The internal network of professionals and external advisers we have within ABI are an indispensable part of the success of the company and the legal function. The successes we have achieved in recent years would not be possible without them, and they play a material role when dealing with this kind of situation.
I usually try to handle crises by anticipating risks and making sure my legal approach stays connected to business reality and its necessities. My goal is always to turn complex legal challenges into clear, practical guidance for decision-makers across different jurisdictions. During regulatory changes and high-stakes disputes, I have brought together legal, finance, and operations teams to keep us compliant, protect our commercial model, and make sure every decision is both strategic and operation-oriented.
What are the major cases or transactions you have been involved in recently?
I led the successful defence of a landmark arbitration that safeguarded Grupo Modelo’s distribution structure — the most significant commercial case since its acquisition by AB InBev. I also coordinated Grupo Modelo’s corporate, labour, and tax restructuring following Mexico’s labour outsourcing reform and have supported cross-border transactions such as the sale of ABI’s direct operation in a handful of islands in the Caribbean and the divestment of San Mateo Water in Peru.
How do you promote diversity and inclusion within your legal department?
At AB InBev, I have had the privilege of working with colleagues from a wide range of countries, backgrounds, and disciplines. That diversity is one of our greatest strengths. Within the legal function, we focus on creating spaces where people can learn from each other and grow together — through mentorship, cross-border collaboration, and the constant exchange of best practices. This dynamic environment not only makes us stronger as lawyers but also shapes a more inclusive culture where different perspectives are valued and turned into better business decisions.
Which legal tech organisations or products are helping you in your role?
We have been very fortunate to receive strong support from our global legal and technology teams, which has allowed us to develop our own tools tailored to our business needs. These platforms help us keep track of regulatory risks, litigations, our local corporate structures, and reporting routines for the capital markets where we operate — particularly in Mexico, Peru, and Ecuador, which are within the Middle Americas Zone. We also use semi-automated tools for contract generation, terms and conditions, and licence management. Having access to these resources has been a game changer: it allows us to focus our time on strategy, not paperwork, and to build more consistent, data-driven legal management across the region.
