Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?

We have implemented a comprehensive knowledge-sharing system within our team. To do this, we created a centralised repository of legal resources, including templates, research materials and precedent documents. By organising and categorising these resources, we have made it easier for team members to access information quickly and efficiently.

What are some of the main trends impacting the industry sector you work in Italy?

There are several trends that I believe are significantly impacting our industry. Firstly, digital transformation, the increasing digitisation of business processes has had a profound impact on the legal sector. From online contract management systems to e-discovery tools, technology is transforming the way legal services are delivered and accessed.

Secondly, privacy and data protection, with the implementation of GDPR, businesses in Italy are focusing on even more compliance and data protection measures. This trend has led to an increased demand for legal expertise in privacy matters.

Another trend has been the significant importance placed on sustainability and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) values in recent years. Companies are increasingly integrating sustainability practices into their operations, and legal professionals are playing a crucial role in advising on compliance, risk management and sustainable business practices.

Finally, Italy has witnessed significant regulatory reforms in various sectors, including banking, finance, energy, and telecommunications. Lawyers are and need to closely monitor these changes to ensure compliance and provide guidance to clients navigating the evolving landscape.

All these trends are shaping the Italian legal sector and demand lawyers to keep up to date, adapt their practices and provide clients with comprehensive and proactive legal advice.

What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?

BBVA has implemented several measures to embed sustainability practices into its core business. This includes establishing green policies and initiatives, promoting energy efficiency, reducing waste, and adopting sustainable procurement practices. To drive and ensure this sustainable practice, my role consists of providing legal guidance on compliance with environmental regulations, advising on sustainability-related contracts and agreements, and incorporating sustainability considerations into the company’s legal framework.

I collaborate closely with other departments to develop and implement sustainable policies, conduct sustainability assessments, and address any legal implications associated with our environmental practices.

How do you stay updated on the evolving regulatory landscape in Italy and ensure compliance with domestic laws, EU regulations, and industry-specific regulations?

I stay updated through several methods, I regularly conduct legal research to stay informed of new laws, regulations, and case law precedents. This includes reviewing legal publications, monitoring government websites, and consulting relevant blogs and legal news sources. I also actively participate in professional networks and associations related to my field. These organisations often offer updates, seminars and conferences focusing on the latest regulatory developments.

Third, I engage in continuous professional education and development by participating in seminars, workshops, and webinars. These programmes help me stay abreast of the latest changes in the regulatory landscape and provide insights into best practices. It is also important to maintain strong connections with colleagues and legal professionals within my firm and the broader legal community. Through collaboration and knowledge sharing, we exchange insights, discuss emerging trends and tackle compliance challenges together.

Finally, I subscribe to regulatory alert services that provide timely updates on new laws, regulations, and amendments. These alerts allow me to stay informed of any changes that may impact my clients or my practice.
