What are the most significant cases, projects or transactions that you and/or your legal team have recently been involved in?

The past couple of years have been exciting and transformative, with the legal teams being actively engaged and involved with supporting the business in conceptualising new product variants in the ever-changing payments ecosystem. The legal team found itself in the centre of all product innovation discussions and in control of drafting and negotiating various mega co-brand alliances with key partners. The legal team also worked in close coordination with the business and IT teams to work on key digitisation initiatives. This helped in making the organisation adopt new technologies quickly making it adept and future ready, keeping the best interests of the customers in mind, while maintaining the highest standards of regulatory and compliance standards. The team also worked relentlessly in successfully transitioning to a litigation management platform, to better manage, both, the cases filed by and against the organisation.

How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crisis to ensure the organisation’s resilience? 

Apart from experience, the key to manage the legal aspects during periods of instability, is the ability to remain calm. A leader with a calm demeanour helps in not just diffusing the tensions and stress of the teams but also helps in thinking strategically in managing any situation with a solution-oriented approach.

Have you had any experiences during your career as a lawyer that stand out as particularly unique or interesting? 

All of us are a summation of our past experiences, and I am proud to look back at my over 3 decades as a legal professional to humbly admit that the learnings derived of/from my seniors have largely shaped who I am today. The world has changed dramatically since the time we qualified as lawyers – with technology fast-tracking everything at the cost of detailing, diluting the art of advocacy and legal practice, and the honour of the legal profession taking a hit. Still, I believe there is hope, as the bright young generation of new lawyers continues to transform the legal ecosystem.
