Nana Kofi Asare
General manager, legal and regulatory affairs | MTN Ghana
Have you had any experiences during your career as a lawyer that stand out as particularly unique or interesting?
The acquisition of a local insurance company by a multinational, which involved cultural, technological and operational transformation of the business.
What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess?
Agility, adaptability and commercial acumen.
How can general counsel foster a corporate culture that supports ESG principles and compliance across all levels of the organisation?
Firstly, set the tone at the top.
Secondly, put ESG at the core of Governance and decision making and embed ESG considerations into the business.
Ensure ESG is treated as a core business risk and opportunity, not a siloed sustainability initiative.
Translate ESG into clear, actionable standards; avoid “check-the-box” compliance; build cross-functional ownership; position Legal as an enabler of responsible growth; invest in targeted training and education; track and report ESG compliance metrics with the same rigor as financial ones; encourage a speak-up and learning culture; and stay ahead of regulatory and enforcement trends.
What is a cause, business or otherwise, that you are passionate about?
I am passionate about watching and attending live sports events, attending live music concerts and spending time with my children.
