Ginger (Jingjie) Lu, senior legal director for Greater China at multinational medical equipment manufacturer Smith & Nephew describes the company’s legal team as ‘lean but mighty’, and is a team that is fully able to provide quality legal support to all strands of the company’s operations throughout Greater China. Lu explains that the team has shifted its focus in recent months, and now spends more time and resources ‘on the proactive end [of the business], for instance, effective and innovative legal training and projects to prevent non-compliance as compared to the time and resources spent to respond to specific matters’. It has also been heavily involved in the company’s e-initiatives, including the ‘opening [of a] flagship store on Tmall, launching e-professional education and e-marketing’. Comprehensive antitrust compliance procedures have also been established by the team which have proved to be a great success, and a culture of ‘performance, innovation and trust’ has been adopted by the department, which is now ‘driving performance and sparking innovation to support, enable and protect business’. Cindy Gong and David Chen came in for particular praise from Lu when discussing the team’s success. External nominating sources were unreserved in their admiration of the whole team’s skills as well: ‘One thing that impresses us is that for any documents or materials sent over by them with regard to the cases are always tailored by relevance and carefully organised by categories. They respect law and external lawyers, and are willing to work side-by-side with the external lawyers to tackle complicated issues in sophisticated cases’.
