General counsel Latin America | Golder Associates

About

Having spent the last nine years at Golder Associates, a global organisation providing consulting, design, and construction services to a range of sectors, Guillermo Herrera Pizarro has a thorough understanding of the company’s operations enabling him to expertly advise the company as it’s general counsel for Latin America, a position he took over in 2018. He initially joined the company in 2010 as a contract coordinator in its Santiago office, before becoming in-house counsel for the office the following year. Regarding the strong knowledge he has built up at Golder over his long tenure, Herrera says: ‘I believe that having a solid and strong connection with operations and the business allow me to have a deep understanding of our market, and connecting legal in-house services and our knowledge to the business strategy which provides solutions aligned with our values and culture’. It is no surprise therefore that Herrera has contributed towards Golder’s ambitions in numerous ways, including leading the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) process for Latin America, creating a coordinated and centralised claims management process aligned with company protocols and the implementation of corporate authority risk matrix and project risk committee in Latin America. He also explains that he is ‘currently developing a global “lesson learn programme” with an emphasis on the process and legal foundation for the programme, allowing us to benefit from past experience while avoiding the risks that often accompany less thoughtful lessons learned programmes’. Amongst his highlights at Golder, Herrera ranks creating and commissioning the company’s new operations in Colombia and Mexico as one of the highest. His credentials as one of the country’s most proficient in-house lawyers does not end there, and when asked to comment on significant transactions he’s worked on for Golder, Herrera says the following: ‘Participating in our syndicate agreement is always relevant. But, negotiating our contract with Samarco after the dam breach on 2015 was a relevant transaction, not because of the budget, because of the conditions surrounding the dam and social pressure due to the breach’. With such achievements already under his belt, Golder continues to benefit from the skills and knowledge of its most senior lawyer in the region.
