Rustam Juma
General counsel and corporate secretary | Volkswagen Group Canada
Legal team size: seven
What projects are you most proud to have worked on over the past 12 months?
I aim to serve communities and improve the lives of others by providing inclusive leadership. The projects I am most proud to have worked on over the past year are those that have had the greatest impact on our people. This includes advancing our diversity, equity and inclusion goals, creating psychologically safe environments for employees to thrive, and providing support to help address the growing mental health crisis, among other people-related initiatives.
Have you had any experiences during your career as a lawyer that stand out as particularly unique or interesting?
At Volkswagen, I have had the pleasure of working on contracts for the sale of track-only Lamborghinis, setting up the Bugatti sales network in Canada, establishing key partnerships with competitors such as Tesla, and helping to de-risk the implementation of the world’s largest deployment of a cloud-based human capital management (HCM) software suite provided by SAP.
How does your team contribute to the overall business strategy of the company?
Our vision as a department is: “To support sustainable growth by providing quality advice to ensure we can all deliver best-in-class products and services that are safe, compliant with applicable laws, and better for the environment.” We see ourselves as a key enabler of the business, with the primary objective of helping it achieve its strategy by removing barriers. We accomplish this by acting as an integral conduit to enable growth and innovation, supporting strategic decisions, helping manage risk, avoiding crises, and seeking cost efficiencies.
