General counsel, corporate secretary and privacy officer Peter V. Nguyen leads the legal department at Resolver, and along with legal operations co-ordinator Margaret McKee, runs the internal legal team of the software company. The department is focused on providing high quality, practical, business-oriented legal services in a timely manner to support a high-growth, rapidly expanding, global business. According to Nguyen, ‘the department is built on three key pillars; being as “low touch” and “self-service” as possible, being radically transparent in processes, and dedication to being operationally efficient’. It achieves these goals by operationalising as many processes and procedures as possible, providing internal clients with 24/7 access to key documentation along with corresponding training and guides. It also leverages internally developed technological tools to automate as many workflows as possible, and to provide complete visibility on the status of matters on a real-time basis. The team deploys its resources as efficiently as possible by assigning tasks based on respective strengths, abilities and expertise. McKee is focused on triaging and managing legal requests from inception to completion and taking care of routine, tactical legal requests; whilst Nguyen is focused on addressing the more complex, strategic legal projects. In early 2018 Nguyen, working with a junior product manager, configured Resolver’s primary software platform to develop a software-based legal intake tool. After multiple iterations, the tool became operational internally in June 2018 and is now the foundation of the technology-enabled, operationally-efficient, transparent and accountable legal department. Nguyen explains that, ‘the tool has been so successful that we have taken steps to commercialise it and make it generally available to other general counsel and legal departments’.
