As Legal Director at SAP Belgium N.V., I am responsible for all legal matters concerning both the Belgian entity and its Luxembourg branch. Operating as a solo legal counsel, my role spans a very wide range of responsibilities, from strategic legal advice to commercial negotiations. Over the years, I’ve developed a reputation for being a pragmatic, business-focused legal partner who combines legal expertise with a strong understanding of operational and commercial realities. My ability to translate legal complexity into clear, actionable advice has helped drive business outcomes while safeguarding compliance and reputation.

One of the most significant developments in recent years has been the rapid acceleration of regulatory activity across Europe. The legal landscape has undergone a ‘tsunami’ of new and complex legislative initiatives such as the AI Act, Data Act, and Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA). These developments, alongside evolving guidance on data privacy, cybersecurity, and consumer protection, have significantly impacted how legal teams operate and created a complex and fast-moving legal environment. These changes are particularly impactful for technology companies, and staying ahead of them has become crucial.

In-house lawyers must evolve alongside the industries they support, embracing new tools, expanding their skill sets, and staying ahead of regulatory developments. Success as an in-house lawyer today requires more than technical legal knowledge. It demands adaptability, strong communication skills, and the ability to build trust across diverse teams. I place particular emphasis on active listening and being adaptable – qualities that help foster collaboration and ensure that legal advice is both relevant and well-received. I aim to be a trusted advisor who understands the business context and contributes meaningfully to strategic decision-making.

The legal profession continues to evolve rapidly, and I believe that continuous learning and openness to change are essential. Whether it’s mastering new technologies, navigating emerging regulations, or refining interpersonal skills, I see each challenge as an opportunity to grow and add value.

Looking back, I’ve grown significantly throughout my career. Having worked in the technology sector for nearly 20 years, I’ve had the opportunity to support innovation from many angles – whether through being involved in several complex commercial commercial deals, regulatory shifts, or internal transformation.

Each role and challenge has helped shape my approach: combining legal precision with business pragmatism and always keeping the human element in focus.
