Originally from Peru, Nilton César Huaman Navarrete, senior lawyer at Telefe, moved to Argentina after practicing in Lima for a medium sized Peruvian law firm with an international scope. In 2005, he came to Argentina to take a course in company law, and later joined Brons & Salas, an Argentine law firm, where he worked for almost ten years. In 2013, he joined Telefe as a litigation in-house lawyer. Currently, his duties are focused not only in litigation, but also in IP, content protection, and anti-piracy tasks, among others. On the switch from private to in-house practice, Huaman identifies that, ‘such change made me realise that in order to do a very good job I needed to learn the company business and its role in the television market, and that it would not be easy since the business changes with technology advances and society’s preferences. [The] goal implied [that I] study constantly, try to go deep in the causes and expectations of the businesses or conflicts in which one participates, and adapt to new “environments” [such as] the internet, streaming, and new businesses’. Huaman’s main task is to be responsible for managing the judgments of the company is aimed at seeking to maintain and reduce these contingencies progressively. This task – a permanent objective – has gained good results for the company in this regard. In the last three years he has been involved in many important issues, the main and most important transaction was definitely the purchase of Telefe by Viacom. The entire legal team was closely involved in the last steps of such a large and intense process. Huaman highlights that he is ‘proud to be part of a global leading company [such] as Viacom and to share that same feeling with my spectacular fellows in business and legal affairs of the company.
