What are the key projects that you have been involved in over the past twelve months?
I supported the bond repurchase and delisting process for our publicly listed bond, and the company’s execution of a new credit facility.
I also managed ongoing corporate governance matters for the reMarkable Group companies and supported the complex legal aspects of a major workforce restructuring initiative, as well as strengthening retail partnership agreements and third-party distribution channel contracts to support our expanding global reach.
Another key project was the reMarkable Paper Pro Move product launch; I supported the legal framework for the project, including intellectual property protection, regulatory certifications across 50+ countries, and commercial partnership agreements.
I implemented and tested a new Legal AI Bot with promising results, which will enhance our team’s efficiency and allow the team to focus on higher-value strategic work.
I also addressed tariff-related legal challenges and trade compliance issues arising from the challenging geopolitical climate, including supply chain risk mitigation strategies across our China, Malaysia, and Vietnam production facilities.
As AI becomes increasingly integrated into legal teams, and the pressure grows to ‘do more with less’, how can GC balance efficiency, quality and human judgement?
We have only just started to implement and integrate AI into the daily work in our Legal team, but we have quickly come to a stage where we are using AI to eliminate repetitive, low-value tasks, contract reviews for standard terms, routine compliance checks and policy queries. This frees up our team to focus on more complex negotiations, strategic risk assessment, and business-critical decision making where human expertise is irreplaceable.
I believe this is just the beginning of a more exciting journey where AI can take over more of the low-value tasks both for the legal team and the rest of the organisation, and free up time and space for human thinking.
Better thinking through technology is also the mission of our product development at reMarkable, where we believe that human thinking and the pen becomes increasingly relevant in the age of AI.
What key trends – and challenges – should in-house lawyers be monitoring over the next year?
What key trends and challenges to focus on will, to a certain extent, depend on which industry you are in. Leading the Legal department in a global consumer electronic hardware and software company, I have a sharp eye on the uncertain global political situation, including uncertainty around trade tariffs and supply of memory chips and critical components in our hardware.
There is also increasing regulatory requirements for product compliance in various areas.
In addition, proper internal management of our IP portfolio of patents and trade marks is always very important to us, particularly in times with budget constraints.
I believe that the most successful strategy will be to try to stay ahead of these trends and challenges rather than just reacting to them. This means building flexible legal frameworks now that can adapt to shifting regulations and navigate uncertainty rather than just managing compliance.
