Senior legal director, surgery and strategic solutions EMEA | Johnson & Johnson
What are the key projects that you have been involved in over the past 12 months?
My recent focus has been on introducing new digital health technology to the EU market. This has involved extensive interpretation and application of evolving health and digital laws across various jurisdictions. Successful collaboration with R&D, software engineers, technology teams, and commercial organisations has been crucial for these projects. The rapid development of new regulations means we are simultaneously implementing and shaping legislation to establish a trusted framework for data and digital health.
How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
Navigating the digital space demands agility in shaping and implementing new legislation, alongside a willingness to explore new technologies, ideas, and implementations. This requires flexibility, resilience, an open mind, and clear communication. I prioritise constant engagement with my business teams, keeping up with innovation in our sector, and thinking strategically in collaboration with them. Engaging with customers during meetings and conferences further enhances my ability to anticipate and prioritise projects effectively.
Have you had any experiences during your career as a lawyer that stand out as particularly unique or interesting?
Fundamentally understanding the current challenges and opportunities in the health care system, both for health care professionals and their institutions, has been eye-opening for me. It has helped me to refine my perception of risk, grounding my legal advice in practical reality. And of course, there is nothing more motivational than experiencing first-hand how devices and technology can improve patients’ lives.
What is a cause, business or otherwise, that you are passionate about?
I am passionate about how increased data access and use can transform health care. Understanding the impact of therapies and the devices based on real word data will allow health care systems to take a truly value based approach. I believe a trusted regulatory framework for data and new technologies is needed, appropriately balancing patient rights with the need to drive and protect innovation. Legal professionals play a key role in shaping these regulations, explaining their context and ensuring purposeful implementation.
