What are the key projects that you have been involved in over the past 12 months?
Over the past 12 months, I have been involved in various key projects. I supported the preparation and negotiation of commercial contracts for all business divisions (pharmaceuticals, crop science and consumer health), ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulations as well as the preparation of tenders, ensuring compliance at all times. I monitored, oversaw and facilitated compliance of the organisation in newly transposed EU law including inter alia the NIS2 Directive, and the Accessibility Act. I collaborated with business teams to finalise closed budget agreements and provided support for clinical operations to facilitate efficient execution of clinical trials. I engaged in initiatives to enhance data privacy measures and worked on corporate compliance topics to ensure adherence to legal and ethical standards.
Additionally, I responded to requests from regulatory authorities, prepared necessary documentation, and oversaw the preparation of corporate documentation. I supported the defense of intellectual property rights, particularly regarding patents for PH products, assisted in changing the operational mode for the crop science division, and facilitated in the development of digital tools for both the crop science and consumer health divisions to enhance customer satisfaction and engagement.
What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess?
The most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess include strong legal expertise to navigate relevant laws and regulations, alongside business acumen to align legal advice with strategic objectives and business priorities. Effective communication skills are vital for conveying complex legal concepts clearly to non-legal stakeholders and for negotiation. Problem-solving abilities are crucial for identifying issues and developing practical solutions, while adaptability is important in a constantly evolving legal landscape. Collaboration skills facilitate teamwork across various functions, and a commitment to ethical judgment ensures the organization’s integrity. Proficiency in negotiation helps in reaching favorable agreements, and risk management skills are essential for assessing and mitigating legal risks. Lastly, technological proficiency allowing use of digital tools enhances efficiency in legal processes. Together, these attributes enable in-house counsel to effectively support their organizations in navigating complex legal and business environments.
Based on your experiences in the past year, are there any trends in the legal or business world that you are keeping an eye on, of which you think other in-house lawyers should be mindful?
Based on my experiences in the past year, several trends in the legal and business world are important for in-house lawyers to watch, especially the need for lawyers to act as business partners.
First, there is a growing emphasis on collaboration between legal and business teams. In-house lawyers are expected to understand the company’s goals and provide legal support that aligns with those objectives. Building strong relationships with other functions is crucial for identifying legal issues that could affect business operations.
Second, digital transformation is changing how legal work is done. In-house lawyers should be aware of how technology can improve legal processes, compliance, and risk management. This includes understanding data privacy laws and the impact of new technologies like artificial intelligence.
Additionally, there is an increasing focus on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) issues. In-house counsel need to recognise how these factors influence corporate strategy and compliance. As stakeholders demand more transparency, lawyers must help ensure their organisations meet these expectations.
Finally, ongoing changes in regulations across various industries require in-house lawyers to stay alert and adaptable. Keeping up with regulatory developments is essential for effective risk management.
In summary, in-house lawyers should embrace their role as business partners by collaborating with other teams, using technology, focusing on ESG issues, and staying informed about regulatory changes. This proactive approach will enhance the legal function and contribute to the overall success of the organisation.
What is a cause, business or otherwise, that you are passionate about?
I am passionate about ensuring patient early access to pharmaceutical products and clinical trials, particularly through innovative approaches. This cause is crucial because timely access to new treatments can significantly improve patient outcomes and quality of life. Working for a company that embodies the motto “health for all” aligns perfectly with this mission, as it emphasizes the importance of making healthcare accessible and equitable for everyone. By leveraging innovative technologies and methodologies, we can streamline the process of bringing new therapies to market and enhance participation in clinical trials. Ultimately, my goal is to contribute to a healthcare landscape where patients have the opportunity to access groundbreaking treatments early, thereby fostering a healthier future for all.
