Director, Legal, Sustainability, and Corporate Affairs | Softys
What are the most significant cases, projects, and/or transactions that you and/or your legal team have recently been involved in?
Softys has continued its expansion process across the region, solidifying its leadership in the tissue product category and its position as second in personal care. Over the past year, the company took control of Ontex’s operations in Brazil, further strengthening our growth in that demanding market. This strategic acquisition was a significant undertaking, requiring extensive legal diligence and coordination to ensure a seamless transition and integration.
How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crisis to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
I believe the key lies in a culture of prevention and an early focus on business risks. During periods of high volatility and uncertainty, this proactive approach is more crucial than ever. Legal professionals must be fully involved in the day-to-day management of the business, offering a preventive and timely perspective while actively collaborating with other departments from the inception of every project. This not only helps prevent risks, but also generates opportunities and improves cost efficiency. By embedding legal expertise throughout the business process, we can identify potential issues early, mitigate them effectively, and contribute to the overall resilience of the organisation.
Based on your experiences in the past year, are there any trends in the legal or business world that you are keeping an eye on that you think other in-house lawyers should be mindful of?
Evidently, everything related to AI has become a focal point and a priority. For in-house lawyers, the first step in addressing this trend is to ensure the order and accessibility of all company documents and information. This foundational work is essential for safely and effectively implementing AI systems. Understanding the legal implications of AI, from data privacy to intellectual property, is paramount, and a well-organised information infrastructure will be crucial for navigating these complexities.
How does your team contribute to the overall business strategy of the company? Can you share an example of a recent legal-led initiative that had a significant impact?
At Softys, the legal team is obligated to be an active participant in every company initiative and project from the outset. Our role is to contribute preventively and opportunely. We are called upon to collaborate with all business and operational areas, truly functioning as one cohesive team. In this sense, we have proactively taken initiatives in matters related to consumer attention, working in very close collaboration with other teams. We are acutely aware that our priority is always our customers and consumers, and our legal efforts directly support this fundamental business principle, ensuring compliance and enhancing customer satisfaction.
