How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
In times of crisis or instability, I believe in moving quickly, collaboratively, and strategically. At Uber, we bring together different cross functional teams to design a coordinated response from all angles. Rather than working in silos, we sit down together to map out a full-spectrum plan – assessing legal risks, preparing public narratives, addressing operational impacts, and aligning on business decisions. This integrated approach ensures we act decisively and with a unified voice, enabling the business to stay agile, protected, and forward-looking.
At Uber, resilience means constantly evolving testing, adapting, and pushing boundaries. Legal plays a critical role in making that possible. We use legal strategy and litigation not just as defensive tools, but as proactive levers to challenge outdated regulatory frameworks, defend our disruptive model, and create room for innovation.
By thinking creatively and acting boldly, we help the business keep moving – ven when the path forward is unclear. Our goal is to find legally sound ways to support experimentation, unlock new opportunities, and ensure the business can keep adapting in a fast-changing world.
What emerging technologies do you see as having the most significant impact on the legal profession in the near future, and how do you stay updated on these developments?
Artificial Intelligence is, without question, the most influential emerging technology for the legal profession. Its impact on litigation is immediate. Advanced AI tools, specifically Large Language Models (LLMs) like Google’s Gemini, allow us to analyse immense volumes of data and evidence. This provides deeper insights and helps identify critical patterns far more efficiently than through manual review.
As a technology company, embracing innovation is fundamental. At Uber, AI is treated as a companion to the legal team, not a replacement. We receive constant training and actively integrate these powerful tools into our workflows to enhance our analytical capabilities, drive efficiency, and strengthen our legal strategies.
