How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
My team and I draw our energy and inspiration from providing valuable legal services in a commercial setting. Understanding and addressing the major challenges facing our business in Denmark is at the heart of everything we do. We anticipate emerging legal risks, with the aim not only to secure the most sustainable long-term business but also to achieve the most optimal short-term gains.
During times of instability or crises, my team and I take a proactive and strategic approach. We conduct thorough risk assessments to identify potential legal challenges and highlight legal considerations regarding mitigation strategies. With the support of a dedicated, full-scale operational crisis management team, including legal experts, we monitor the situation and provide real-time advice, ensuring our actions align with the organisation’s goals.
Clear and transparent communication with stakeholders is key to building trust and maintaining our reputation, especially in times of crisis. Flexibility and adaptability allow us to respond effectively to rapidly changing circumstances.
As a business partner, we are involved in all aspects of the case, from operational to managerial considerations, to assess risk. Offshore operations are also part of our scope, which occasionally leads us to visit our offshore colleagues. In-depth understanding and close collaboration with the entire business are essential.
What are the major cases or transactions you have been involved in recently?
Recently, my team and I have been an integral part of the redevelopment project of the Tyra gas production facilities. The project makes Denmark self-sufficient and once again a net exporter of natural gas, contributing significantly to Europe’s independence from Russia. Hence, it has had a massive impact on our entire organisation, as well as delivering considerable value to the partnership we are operating on behalf of. The legal role has encompassed various commercial, legal, and business engagements that demonstrate the depth of legal involvement required for such a complex project.
One key aspect of our involvement has been addressing regulatory requirements, liability issues, and contractual arrangements for the Tyra project. This includes supporting the drafting of commercial agreements as well as operational contracts, ensuring that strong business practices are implemented across contractors while maintaining compliance with Danish law and TotalEnergies’ principles.
The culmination of these efforts was marked by the successful re-establishment of gas flow from several reservoirs, leading to Tyra reaching full operation in March 2025. It has been incredibly rewarding to be part of this journey and witness the positive impact of our collective efforts.
How do you prioritise diversity and inclusion within your legal department?
TotalEnergies in Denmark has employees from more than 60 countries and a wide range of diverse functional backgrounds. Creating an inclusive working environment is essential for our business success. As an organisation, we have implemented several initiatives to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, allowing all colleagues to be seen and heard both personally and professionally. In the legal team, a focus area of mine is to establish trust and allow for all to feel safe to share their perspective. With a team split across Copenhagen and Esbjerg, most often engaging remotely, this requires a more structured approach, e.g. with regular check-ins on well-being when we start our team meetings. Providing regular training and development opportunities focused on DEI is a strong effort I believe we should maintain. Additionally, we have mentorship and sponsorship programmes that support the career development of underrepresented employees by providing guidance, support, and advocacy. By prioritising and welcoming our team’s differences and actively seeking input both within the team and across departments, we aim to create a more equitable and supportive work environment that benefits all of us as well as the business.
