Steven L. Fasman

Senior vice president and general counsel | Catalent

About

Steven L. Fasman operates as the senior vice president and general counsel for Catalent, working within a highly regulated industry with over 30 factories spread across five continents. This has seen him become increasingly competent in dealing with multiple regulators who increasingly demand more of him. ‘We have overcome these challenges by adding to the capabilities of the department, by partnering smartly with the right outside counsel in the right locations, and by partnering with our colleagues throughout the Catalent organisation to leverage their knowledge and expertise’, says Fasman. As the general counsel, he is responsible for its 30-person legal department and all aspects of assuring legal compliance worldwide. He also holds the titles of corporate secretary and chief compliance officer, and since he joined Catalent three years ago, he has taken it upon himself to replace a large portion of the staff and reorganise the department and structure. This was done to allow and promote personal growth and development, as well as providing the resources to make efficient use of the team’s primary work product – commercial contracts. He has since hired new personnel to address the gaps, change the definition of the roles and most importantly empower his direct reports to do more independently while maintaining accountability, oversight and increased engagement. Fasman points out: ‘These actions have allowed the company to successfully tap the equity and debt markets on multiple occasions and permitted seamless contracting with our commercial partners’. Fasman began his career at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison in New York, in 1987 as an associate, leaving in 1992 to join MacAndrews & Forbes Holdings as senior counsel. He stayed there until 2014 having undertaken positions of increasing responsibility, ultimately assuming the title of executive vice president-law. During his tenure there he developed a programme for managing the approval of individuals and entities associated with MacAndrews by various gaming jurisdictions, seeking approvals from multiple jurisdictions of licenses to conduct gaming activities including lotteries, the production of slot machines and other gaming equipment.
